Bad Day? Coconut Oil.
Two words - coconut oil. If there is one product you should have on hand at all times, it's coconut oil. I can honestly say it's the one thing I use religiously for several different reasons. Now, this is most definitely not a sponsored blog post, this is me speaking from the heart about something that has really worked for me for many things.
Coconut oil is the edible oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts harvested on trees. Not sure why it took society so long to figure out how amazing it is, but it seems that in more recent years it's become much "trendier", but for good reason!
Over the course of the past couple weeks, I've been working to complete my Precision Nutrition certification. In the chapter on macronutrients, we paid close attention to macronutrients - fats being one of them. We need to get a variety in our sources of fat because all them do different things in the body. Fats provide us with energy, hormonal balance, forms cell membranes, helps transport fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and helps with the development of our brain and nervous system ... need I say more?! Coconut oil has been said to be a key energy fuel source, have anti-microbial properties, potentially aid in weight loss, and is easy to digest. There are a ton of studies done on it, so plug it into google (scholar) and see what I mean!
Note: Just recently there's been some coconut oil-shaming and it's important to do your research - know what sources your reading, trusting and listening to. There is always going to be pros and cons for everything, so make sure you're doing your digging (research) in trusted places!
Here are some of my favourite uses for coconut oil and things to keep in mind when buying ...
Top 3 Uses
- Cooking/ Baking
Coconut oil has a wicked high cooking point, meaning you keep all the healthy benefits even when it's heated to a high temperature, and it makes a great substitute for butter in baking (for most recipes). This powerhouse of an oil is great for digestive health, hormone regulation, and inflammation.
- Skincare/ Haircare
This oil is an excellent moisturizer for dry skin and because of its anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, it helps kill bacteria that may cause acne. I use it on my body as well as my face, but since everyone's skin is different, perhaps try it on your cheek and leave it overnight to see how your skin may react to it. You can also throw it in your hair, let it sit overnight and rinse out for a quick DIY hair mask.
- Coffee Kick
Bulletproof coffee (black coffee + MCT oil + grass-fed butter) is all the rage these days, but for good reason. Adding a spoonful or coconut oil (or MCT oil) helps aid in digestive as stated above, as well as with satiety and appetite between meals. It also helps with providing an energy boost and helping the body use fats as a fuel source.
Recipe for Coco-Coffee:
- 1 Cup of Black Coffee
- 1 Tbsp of Coconut Oil
- 1/2 Tsp of Cinnamon
- 1/2 Tsp of Vanilla
- Blend & enjoy!
Things to Look For
- Always get UNREFINED coconut oil - this ensures that the coconut meat has not been bleached or deodorized in any way (you want it to be as natural as possible)
- The ingredients list has one ingredient - coconut oil (seriously, read the ingredients, you'd be surprised)
- Prices - this stuff does tend to be a little pricier, but check out spots like Costco where you can get a massive tub for under $20
- Fair trade, organic, and raw are also other key words that are good to keep in mind when buying the good stuff
