The Extra 15 Minutes
Mornings are the best. I have written about being a morning person before, but I thought I'd put a different spin on it, this time focusing on morning rituals, or the extra 15-minutes as I like to refer to it. Maybe you prefer training later in the day and there is nothing wrong with that, but there is something very special about becoming a morning person to take time for yourself to start the day.
I personally use my workout as my "me time" every morning. It gives me the opportunity to clear my head, break a sweat and do something that makes me feel good (thanks to endorphins). However, I have started setting my alarm 15 minutes earlier than I normally would. The first thing I do is train, but afterwards I have 15 minutes to sit, relax and set myself up for my day ahead. I usually take a peek at my agenda and map out what my day looks like. I may take a look at my emails and actually read through ones that need attention and coffee is always a good idea at that time too ... Finally, something new I've started to do is to write down three things I am grateful for for that particular day.
I find that lately I've been getting so caught up in being overwhelmed at grad school, that I've started to forget about all the wonderful opportunities I have. I'd like to think of myself as a grateful person, but sometimes it helps to write things down to put things in perspective. Try to make these three grateful things specific to your day or particular week. Every day I wake up grateful for my family, friends and health, but what about right now am I really thankful for?
Honestly, even if the extra 15 minutes in the morning is just to watch Snapchat stories or sports highlights - if that's how you want to spend your time and that is what will help you relax a bit, then do it. But taking a little extra time for yourself will start to add up in a big way. Maybe it's getting a 15-minute walk or run in, maybe it's actually sitting down and enjoying a cup of coffee, or if you're my mother, maybe it's to colour yet another picture in her colouring book. Whatever it is, do it, enjoy it and let it start your day off on the right foot.
Remember how much of a gift it really is to wake up each and every morning with an able body and endless opportunities.
