The Morning Glory Elixir
I love my morning coffee, and perhaps not for the reasons you think. Most people drink coffee for the energy boost and though that is an awesome perk, I actually enjoy the taste of coffee and the culture around it. I use the time I have my coffee as my “decompress” time - it gives me a moment to sit down, turn on the Food Network and actually enjoy my morning elixir.
Generally my early mornings are busy coaching and working out myself, so when I return home I normally have some time to chill and reset for the rest of my day. Having time to actually make my coffee and my breakfast is such a luxury and one that I don’t take for granted - that’s why I’ve been getting so creative with my mixtures!
As I mentioned, the caffeine in coffee was what most people really crave in the morning but sometimes it’s nice to make yourself a little treat that does the body good! Oftentimes when you go to a cafe, the lattes are pumped with added sugar, additives and other things you probably don’t want to be drinking first thing. When you take it into your own kitchen, you get to control what goes in (which is very important).
Sometimes when I’ve been running around in the early hours I don’t always feel like a huge meal right away (maybe I’m weird like that), but I know it’s important to get nutrients into my body (just coffee doesn’t count) especially if I’ve worked out myself. I created this Morning Glory Elixir to help promote recovery, cognitive health and energy!
Important to note that alongside the coffee is a quality source of PROTEIN + FATS
PROTEIN = building and repairing lean muscle mass (especially important post-workout)
FATS = cognitive health and absorption of nutrients
Morning Glory Elixir
1 Cup of Coffee (McCafe is my favourite)
1/2 Scoop of Vanilla Protein
1 Tsp of Cacao Powder
1 Tsp of Hazelnut Butter
1/4 Tsp of Cinnamon
Optional: 1 Tsp of Coconut Butter or 1 Tsp of Cacao Butter (for an additional source of healthy fats), or 1/2 Tsp of Maca Powder
Brew coffee (Keurig, french press, coffee machine)
Pour brewed coffee into blender and add other ingredients
Blend on high for 30-45s
Pour into your favourite mug, turn on Food Network and enjoy!
NOTE: You can also swap the protein for collagen peptides, but I like using protein because it helps with the frothy-ness and taste! Also, you can swap the hazelnut butter for any nut butter - I also recommend cashew or almond.
This morning elixir helps me recover and energize at the same time and it also symbolizes a moment to decompress and slow down which is very important with a go-go-go lifestyle.
